CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines—Samar State University’s (SSU) research team earned the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Agricultural Research and Innovation (ICARI 2025) held on December 1-3, 2025, for a study introducing an innovative and sustainable approach to mud crab aquaculture.
The award-winning paper, titled “Acoustic Frequency-Responsive Trapping for Sustainable Capture Dynamics in Mud Crab Aquaculture,” presents a novel trapping method that uses sound frequencies to improve capture efficiency while reducing ecological impact in mud crab farming.
The study was presented online by Engr. Nikko Ardel P. Floretes, representing the research team during the conference. The research team is composed of Engr. Floretes, Engr. Walvies Mc L. Alcos, Engr. Francis Jerric J. Candido, Engr. Justin Manuel C. Mora, Engr. Rojay A. Flores, Engr. Adrian U. Gadin, and Engr. Richard J. Fabriag.
This SSU invention’s focus on mud crab aquaculture resonates with national efforts to promote sustainable fisheries and food security. Its acoustic-based approach is also a novel response to challenges in traditional crab farming that aligns with emerging research on sustainable development.
