iPOVCON’s Subtrack 2B spotlights studies on sustainability, governance, food security

NAVAL, BILIRAN, PhilippinesThe session for Track 2: Innovations in Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Security, featuring Subtrack 2B:  Sustainability, Governance, and Food Security, has just concluded with the presentation of a total of 19 presentations under the track.

The session opened with Mari Anne B. Gojar from Sorsogon State University, who shared “Agri-Fisheries Extension Resources and Capabilities Assessment in the Municipality of Sta. Magdalena, Sorsogon, Philippines.” Flordeliz B. Dacuyan of UP Tacloban College followed with “Barriers and Enablers of Digital Extension Services’ Adoption of Smallholder Farmers: The Case of Cambodia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.”

From UP Tacloban College, Antonio D. Salazar, Jr. presented “Coffee Futures in Northern Thailand: A Decolonial Critique of Food Security Narratives in Policy and Planning.” Marithel J. Tiangco of Batangas State University contributed a tourism-focused study titled “Cultural Mapping of Nasugbu, Batangas as Input to Sustainable Tourism Planning.”

Maria Charito L. Suyom of Saint Paul School of Professional Studies presented “Data-Driven Insights and Policy Recommendations for Food Security: Impacts of Population Growth and Food Production in Eastern Visayas, Philippines.” Meanwhile, Engr. Mary Glen L. Caugma, PSMCM, from Occidental Mindoro State College, showcased “Drought Risk Mapping: Increasing Agricultural Resiliency in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro through a Drought Risk Management Approach.”

From UP Tacloban College, Dr. Blesilda P. Badoc-Gonzales presented “DSS Predicting Production of Post-Disaster Tourism MSMEs towards a Sustainable Market of Agricultural Produce,” followed by Rowena S. Guiang with “Farmers’ Lived Experiences of Eco-Guilt.”

Stephen V. Naul of Southern Leyte State University presented “From Production to Sustainability: A Bibliometric Assessment of Aquaculture Research in the Philippines, 2013–2023.” Dr. Susan F. Astillero of Sorsogon State University discussed “Gender Dynamics in Value Chains and Natural Resource Utilization: Roles, Challenges, and Shifting Norms at Nag-Aso Lake, Philippines.”

Dr. Merlita P. Dela Cruz of Occidental Mindoro State College explored local governance and gender equality in “Gender Equality Initiatives and Good Governance among Primary Cooperatives in Occidental Mindoro, Philippines.” Complementing this was Ar. Mark Stephen G. Felipe, also from Occidental Mindoro State College, who shared “Green and Resilient Architectural Design for Evacuation Centers in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro: Addressing Rainfall, Flooding, and Storm Surge.”

From Sorsogon State University, Brian Gabriel J. Buenaobra presented “NDVI-Based Temporal Analysis of Greenspaces in Sorsogon City Using Remote Sensing and GIS.” Laurence Adrian S. Camayudo of UP Tacloban College discussed “Resilient Incomes, Secure Meals: Evidence on Income Diversification and Food Security from the Philippines.”

Another UP Tacloban College researcher, April Grace Lazarito, analyzed market reform and social equity in “Restructuring Food Access through Market Modernization: Power, Control, and the Case of Cebu’s Carbon Market.” Mark Jesse P. Atay of Leyte Normal University presented “Rooted Resilience: Revitalizing Communal Labor Traditions for Sustainable and Disaster-Resilient Agriculture in Eastern Visayas, Philippines.”

Gerwyn P. Enerlan of UP Tacloban College offered insights on financial resilience through his paper “Savings as a Resilience Tool: The Interaction of Community DRRM Systems and Savings Group Sustainability,” while Jordan M. Pocaan of Sorsogon State University discussed environmental governance in “Stakeholders’ Role and Support Mechanism in Boiling Lake Conservation: A Case Study in Manito, Albay.”

Finally, Ruth Edisel Rylle B. Sadian-Cercado of UP Tacloban College presented “Weathering Loss: Coping with Ecological Grief in Climate-Vulnerable Farming Communities in Leyte.”

Each paper underwent rigorous evaluation by Dr. Ronald Orale, Professor at Samar State University (SSU), Dr. Noel Tancinco, Associate Professor at Biliran Province State University (BiPSU), and Dr. Noel Amatosa Jr.
