CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines—Samar State University (SSU) reaffirmed its commitment and prioritization to gender equality and a safe academic community through the Seminar on Sexual Harassment Law and the Safe Spaces Act, spearheaded by the SSU’S Advocacy on Gender and Women Advancement for National Development (SAGWAN), held today, September 16, at the SSU Convention Center, Main Campus, Catbalogan City.
The activity was graced by SSU President Dr. Redentor S. Palencia, who gave some encouraging words on creating a learning and working environment free from harassment and discrimination.
Dr. Nathalie Ann A. Acosta, OVPAA GAD Coordinator, framed the activity’s relevance as part of the university’s continuing commitment to align with national laws while strengthening institutional efforts on gender and development.
The event featured two substantive lectures from legal experts, namely Atty. James Lee Cundangan, Assistant Solicitor General, who gave an in-depth discussion on the Anti-Sexual Harassment Law. Atty Cundangan explained its provisions, implementation, and relevance in both educational and workplace settings. Moreover, Atty. Ruben S. Ayson, Senior State Solicitor, gave a lecture on the Safe Spaces Act, popularly known as the “Bawal Bastos Law,” elaborating on its scope covering physical and online spaces, and its importance in addressing evolving forms of harassment.
The activity was culminated by a message from Asst. Prof. Mary Jane B. Cinco, SAGWAN Faculty-Extensionist, who commended the active participation of attendees and urged them to champion safe spaces within their respective circles.
The seminar drew an engaged audience of 132 students and 34 faculty members and staff. It was also joined by various university key officials including Dr. Felisa E. Gomba, VP for Academic Affairs, Engr. Lourdes P. Amante, VP for Administration and Finance, Dr. Gina U. Espano, VP for Student Affairs and Services, Ms. Arlene J. Tizon, Chief Administrative Officer (Finance Services), Dr. Florabelle Patosa, CAS Dean, Dr. Laura Boller, COED Dean, Dr. Lanie Padaljen, Dean of Graduate School, Dr. Lourdes Del Monte, SSU Paranas Campus Director, and Mr. Arthur Poblete, Board Secretary.
Through SAGWAN’s efforts, SSU continues to set the standard for gender-responsive education and community engagement, as the university ensures that all of its campuses remain not only centers of learning but also spaces of respect, safety, and empowerment.
